“Brilliant” – Niall O’Dowd, Founder of IrishCentral
“Insanely Awesome” – Milwaukee Irish Fest
The Maguires is a four-piece traditional Irish music family band from Wicklow, Ireland. In 2017, they embarked on their first US tour, wowing audiences in six states and getting standing ovations everywhere they played. The highlights of the tour were performances at Montana Folk Festival, and at the largest Irish cultural event in the world, Milwaukee Irish Fest, where they played to c. 5000 people. The band consists of three Maguire kids: Emma (18) on fiddle, flute & whistle; Aoife (16) on concertina & uilleann pipes; Sean (13) on bodhrán; and Dad, Philip, on guitar. The young ages of the kids belie their musical ability and accomplishments, having already clocked up 30 years of musical development between them. When The Maguires take to the stage, the audience very quickly forgets how young the kids are and they become enraptured by the driving rhythm of their music. The band’s repertoire includes traditional favorites and modern tunes with syncopated, infectious rhythms, all delivered with a blend of youthful energy and musical maturity. Their performances always feature a bodhrán solo from Seán, who has had an internet viral hit with a video of one of his solos which has been viewed millions of times online. The Maguires’ debut album, Little Giants and Other Oxymorons, was released in December 2016, and 6 of the 11 album tracks were composed by the band themselves. The band has a strong fan base in Ireland, the US, and the UK, with over 42k followers on Facebook.
Bill Margeson of Live Ireland Radio says “They are good. By that, we don’t mean “good” in the sense of cute or fun in a family way. We mean good. This is really good, honest to God trad music played beautifully.”
